Leon Russell, 96 passed away on December 25, 2017 in Ada, Oklahoma. He was born on June 22, 1921 in Non, Oklahoma to Jesse and Mattie (Hill) Russell. Leon attended Non and Gerty Schools where he graduated. He served our country honorably in the United States Army. During his service, he served in World War II where he earned a bronze star and Certificate of Merit award. He married Wandine Middleton on November 25, 1945 in Holdenville. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Calvin. Continuing a life of service, he served 20 years on the School Board, 9 years as Sunday School Superintendent, one year as Polled Hereford Association, 30 years as Hughes County Conservation District, 12 years Chairman, three years as Area Director, 6 years as FHA Director, 15 years as RCD Director and three years as chairman, two years as the RCD State Association Vice President and two years as President, National Outstanding Council Member 1996, Chairman of HCCD Board 12 years.
Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Wandine Russell, grandson Christopher Rippee.
Survivors include his children Ramona Russell and husband, Victor Mireles of El Paso, Texas, Michael Russell and wife, Jan of Non, Alan Russell and wife, Patty of El Paso, Texas; grandchildren: John M. Rippee, Eddy Russell, Kassie Ingle, Joseph Chagra, Samantha Wood, Ana Velarde, Domenica Mireles, David Mireles, Sarah Mireles, Dash Robleto; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Winnie Yarbrough and husband, Doug of Ada, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service is scheduled for 11:00AM on Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Freewill Baptist Church of Non. Bro. Toby Spoon will officiate the service assisted by Rev. Mike Russell. Pallbearers are Coy Edwards, Merle Edwards, Larry Wilson, Brent Revers, Shelly Turpin, and Bill Johnson. Honorary bearers are the Hughes County Conservation Board, Andy Tucker, Gary Garmon, and Mason Mungle. Interment will follow at the Non Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Non Community Center.
