Muriel Isabelle (Stringfellow) Smith

Muriel Smith passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on Tuesday, May 30, 2017.  She was born 87 years ago on August 17, 1929 in Pryor, Oklahoma to Vida (Hillman) and Jess Stringfellow. Muriel married her life-long love, J.D. Smith on May 28, 1949 and they began their family in 1951 raising three daughters, Rhonda, Kathy and Deena.   Muriel kept a good home for her family while working at JCPenney before starting her own business…the Carpet and Drapery Nook in Elk City, Oklahoma.  She loved to bowl and was among the OKC Thunder’s most enthusiastic fans.  Muriel was also an expert seamstress. She was a vocal and active member of the Democrat Party.  Muriel was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for the whole family using produces from JD’s garden.  Her girls and her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Mustang, Oklahoma.  The family gratefully extends its appreciation to the health care professionals at Mercy Health care who cared for Muriel during her brief illness.

Preceding Muriel in death is her husband, J.D., her parents, brothers Sidney Stringfellow, Cecil Stringfellow, sisters Hazel Maxfield, Pauline Martin, Jesse Smoot and Dorothy Roberts and grandson Shaun Walters.

Left behind to grieve for Muriel’s passing are daughters Rhonda Walters and husband David of Oklahoma City, Kathy Lyles and husband John of Mustang, Deena Smith of Oklahoma City, grandchildren (husbands) Tanna Fried (Bryan), Kristen Hodges (Jake), Elizabeth Gray (Michael), and Hope George (Brett), great grandchildren Ella and Harrison Fried, Hunter and Kolten George and Everett and Hattie Hodges, close family friends Jodi and Brittanie Logan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Chapel at Holdenville Cemetery with visitation at noon that same day at Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville.  Online condolences can be made at
